Wow...I really haven't updated this blog in quite a while! I've been kept pretty busy working on Brandi Bare #4 and all the Kickstarter art rewards that that entailed. (People that backed that kickstarter got regular art updates posted there, so if you missed out on seeing all the new art, that's where it was! :))

Anyway, let's post some new art...

The above piece is for my next Kickstarter...launching sometime in June 2014 (I'm still working out all the kinks and details in scheduling, but it should be soon!).

Bombshells sketch card set from Bad Axe Studios. realized I never actually posted these (aside from 3 preview cards a few months ago).

here are all the cards I did...minus a few of the base cards (which were posted a while back as well).

I did have a lot of fun with these...History Channel and Military Channel are a couple of my favorite tv channels :))

Today is last day of the Brandi Bare Kickstarter. And I've been amazed by how it's turned out! can't thank everyone enough!
Here's some new art of the most recent stretch goal that was reached (2 sets of 4 postcard themed pinups)
The first one's theme is 'Bedtime'. They'll all be colored eventually, but just Brandi's is colored for now.

the other theme was 'Phoning it in'. Featuring the time-honored tradition of girls taking pictures of themselves with their cel phones! where would the internet be without that?!

They'll all be digitally colored eventually and printed and mailed to backers of the Brandi Bare kickstarter that qualified with their pledges.

Here's my contribution to Bad Axe Studios upcoming sketch card set called Bombshells. This is my art for one of the base cards.

first up is the quick digital rough sketch (photoshop)...had the basic idea in my head of a 60's type theme mixed with modern looking military costumes.

I then let it sit for a couple weeks and when I came back to it I refined a bit more...(still in photoshop)

Next step was something I don't always do. Some rough colors in photoshop. Since I knew I wanted to color it with markers, thought I'd put down some colors just to give myself a guide.

Then printed out the rough and using a lightbox transferred the pencils to 11x17 bristol (using col-erase pencils.)

The final colors were done with Copic Markers and just a touch of photoshop cleaning up, here and there.

if you've seen the blog Gene Gonzales and I do (2-pointperspective.blogspot.com) you'll know tomorrow's theme is Brandi Bare, the character I've been drawing for a while :)

I ended up drawing two pictures of her and decided to do one for this blog and the other will be posted there.

For today's post I thought I'd show a couple steps from a Hawkgirl commission (based off the Justice League cartoon look).
(unfortunately I didn't take any progress shots of the actual painting, sorry!)

first up, digital sketch. drawn completely in photoshop.

next, I print out the sketch. Then I use a lightbox to trace the pencils off the printed piece. making adjustments here and there.

Then we just add some paint...acrylic in this case, and ta-da!

I was asked to put her in the classic coppertone ad with Snake Eyes' wolf.

3rd Post!

I thought I'd put together a little walk through on how I created the Gotham Bad Girls girls commission I posted on the first day of the blog. (here)

I first did a few sketches with different ideas. These were all created digitally in photoshop.

After the first image was selected I went ahead and tightened up the sketch (still in photoshop).

The following step was added just so I could get a feel for each character and make sure things weren't too confusing. I usually only do this on multiple character pieces.

Then we get to the actual pencils. Drawn with my favorite pencils, col-erase pencils (red, blue and purple). Not as messy as graphite and I just like having some color on there for when I move to the color stage.

Now the coloring stage. This piece was colored with Copic Markers and some white colored pencil and a touch of white acrylic here and there for highlights.

Next shot shows where I was asked if it was possible to make Catwoman's goggles Red instead of Green. Which worked out rather well (even if I wasn't completely sure it would work :))

I was also asked if I could make her catsuit black instead of purple. Which ended up being an easy fix. Usually when working on a commission with a character that's had multiple looks I usually ask ahead of time if there's a preference for a certain costume. This time I forgot. doh! But it all worked out so no problems. whew!

And here's the final photo before I went ahead and scanned it. (see first blog post for that version)

anyway, hope you enjoy the look behind the scenes. and maybe one of these days I'll do a progress shot on a watercolor piece.

2nd post!

Finishing up my last outstanding commission on my list today. so thought i'd post a couple other recent commissions.

First up is a 9x12 Death (done with copic markers on her, and watercolor for the background).

Next is an 11x17 X-Mas themed  pinup (copic markers with watercolor background). Featuring my character Brandi Bare and a friend. I realize we're no where near christmas, but it's never too early to start (un)dressing for it. right?

First post!

I figured it was about time I started a blog that I actually update more than once a year. My regular website (www.joepekar.com) has some issues...mainly the gallery and blog on it are broken and I have no idea how to fix it :). And since I don't update my Deviant Art page that much, I wanted some place that I could upload all kinds of art, not just finished pieces, but sketches, concepts and other things like that.

So here, we go!

First up is a recent cover for Zenescope's Alice comic (#6)

Next up are two recent commissions.

Catwoman, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are done with Copic Markers. The gal in purple was done with acrylic paint.
